Topological Dogma

The function of dogma is to give deeper expression to the words of God in light of tradition and contemporary signs of the time. This task must constantly be revisited in order to take present thinking into account in speaking of God in ways that are appropriate, believable and useful to people.

Schuld und Sünde (in) der Kirche
Julia Enxing
Guilt and Sins of (in) the Church
A Systematic Theological Investigation

Can the Church be sinful? The tension between the Church's holiness and sinfulness that has hardly been a topic, as well as the largely unanswered question of whether the Church itself can become guilty, both stand in the way of recognizing its responsibility in acts of violence: If the existing understanding of the Church doesn't allow us to think that the Church could become guilty, then this conclusion also must not be allowed. Consequently, there would also be no reason to confess that the Church is guilty. However, the fact that Church confessions of guilt already existed in the past is a first indication that the Church's capacity for guilt is at least not implicitly ruled out. The current study asks for a closer definition of the Church's capacity for guilt.

Going to the Margins
In the footsteps of Jesus as a poor man – from the Second Vatican to Pope Francis

In 1965, at the end of the Second Vatican Council, Council theologian Karl Rahner spoke of “the beginning of a beginning” that the council would signify for the Catholic Church and its new self-determination at the end of modernity and in the global age.

Dialog und Konflikt
Martin Kirschner (ed.)
Dialogue and Conflict
Explorations of places of theological insight

Polarization and blocks to communication between different approaches to faith are a hallmark of our times. Theology must negotiate the multiplicity of different starting points in order to work with the various perspectives and frame conflicts productively to arrive at a differentiated dialogue that reveals the greater truth of God to all.

Was wird aus Religion?

What Will Become of Religion?
Observations, Analyses and Case Histories on an Irritating Transformation

What Will Become of Religion? There are far-reaching theories about this that usually end in »ation«: secularisation, pluralisation or individualisation… These are bird's eye views. But how does what is changing actually feel close up, from the perspective of those to whom their religion really means something? How do they experience the religious change and transformations in the architecture of the religious? How irritating is this? How disappointing? How liberating may it also be? In which direction does the development point? Will binding religious beliefs still play a role? Will religions only be interesting from the aesthetic or even folkloric perspective?

Obituaries - Memories - Tributes: Romano Guardini on the 50th Anniversary of His Death

For many of his contemporaries, Romano Guardini was an important philosophical teacher, spiritual master and companion in the youth, liturgical and cultural movements in preparation for the Second Vatican Council. This is impressively documented in this volume by the collected obituaries, memories and tributes. In addition to Cardinal Döpfner and Auxiliary Bishop Tewes, a selection of more than twenty personalities once again speak out to reconstruct the reputation that Guardini had in the public sphere at the time of his death.
He died in the call of wisdom, but is also described as a »pious and righteous man among the peoples« and an »untiring champion for reconciliation among religions, a forerunner of modern theology.«

Ivo Fürer / Paul M. Zulehner
Europe's Development Challenges the Churches
Activities of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences (CCEE) between Its Founding in 1971 to 1996

In 1971, this led to founding of the Council of European Bishops' Conferences (CCEE). While it promotes the cooperation of the Bishops' Conferences, its foundation simultaneously represents an important step towards the »continentalisation« of the worldwide Catholic Church. Ivo Fürer was its Secretary General from 1971 to 1995. In this volume, he documents 25 exciting years of European Church history.

What We Believe
Understanding the Apostles’ Creed
New, updated edition

“I believe in God the Father ... the Son ... and the Holy Spirit.” Today, this ancient Christian confession raises more questions than it answers. What do the terms and formulas contained in it mean? Do they still have something to do with the lives of contemporary people?

An Gott als Person glauben?
Christian Kummer
Believe in God as a Person?
A Forensic Study

God is a person – a statement of faith firmly anchored in the Christian understanding of God. But what does this statement mean? What can it mean today in an era characterised by scientific thinking? Christian Kummer addresses precisely these burning questions. He sees the perception that every experience of reality, even the experience of a belief in God, takes place in dialogue as an interplay of aspirations and answers
